Description
Hawaiian Outrigger Paddling Canoes near the beach at the Hōaloha canoe hale and the Pailolo Channel of the Pacific Ocean. The Pailolo Channel separates the islands of Molokaʻi and Maui. About 8.4 miles (13.5 km) at its narrowest, it is one of the windiest and roughest in the Hawaiian Islands. The outrigger canoe in Hawaiian is called a waʻa (pronounced vah-ah), a type of canoe featuring one or more lateral support floats known as outriggers which are fastened to one or both sides of the main hull.
